Burscough Methodist Church was founded in 1869. Right from when the church was first built the dream was to also have a school that would be there for the children of the village, surrounding areas and visitors from the many boats that stopped off at Burscough Wharf during the year. Not just to have a school, but a school that was linked to the church and followed the Methodist teaching and practises. This is still the ethos today, 150 years later, that our Church and school work so well together, supporting one another in many ways.
We have 3 Foundation Governors – Rev Michael Tindsley, Mr Brian Guy and Mrs Pat Robinson, and all of these are always on hand to help and assist in any way that they can. Particularly in school activities for the children during lunchtimes, we help to organise and run Quiet Time on Mondays, Story Time on Tuesdays when members from the church also get involved as volunteer readers. A lovely time is had by the children and adults alike!
We also organise two events during the year when children from the school come into Church to join with other children from neighbouring schools for Hope Journey – Meet The Characters of the Christmas Story and Easter Cross Factor – meeting characters from the events of Easter Week. Both of these events couldn’t happen without the commitment of our church members who are only too pleased to help and be involved with our school. Our school, like our church, is very family orientated, generations of local families have followed on through the school and still share the love of coming into our church like they did when they were pupils at Burscough Methodist School.
Our church is open to all and especially the families of the children who attend our school. It is lovely to share time with them in the church Café and also when the school hold their Christmas, Easter and Leavers Services in the church building.
We will work to help the school in any way that we can to bring the message of the love of Jesus to our children and young people. We hope that when all children leave Burscough Methodist School behind they will be well equipped with love, compassion and thoughtfulness and in the words of John Wesley that they will –
Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as ever you can.
